Behind the Scenes: Chapter Twenty of Wrongful Accusations
When Corrupt Twins Attack
This chapter took me the longest to write, not because I didn’t know what would happen, but because I did. It’s violent, emotional, and personal. I had to show Sassy under siege in the most literal way possible and still let her strength shine through.
Let’s break it down.
A Home Invasion and a Turning Point
I knew at some point, Kadijah and Hinniyah would return. Their story wasn’t done. They’d escaped justice before, and I needed to show the lengths they’d go to to maintain control and dominance. The stakes had to rise.
So I brought them right to Sassy’s front door.
Writing note:
I wanted to contrast the normalcy of a Saturday morning with the chaos that follows.
Sassy’s life has already been shaken up, but this moment made it personal—her home invaded, her fiancé wounded, and her life on the line.
Jerry in Danger
Jerry has been Sassy’s grounding force throughout Wrongful Accusations. He’s steady, supportive, and a little soft-spoken, which made him the perfect target in this scene. Putting him in harm’s way wasn’t easy, but it raised the emotional intensity.
Why this mattered:
This isn’t just about Sassy solving cases. It’s about the emotional toll her work takes on her and the people she loves.
Jerry being stabbed, and still managing to shoot Hinniyah, shows that he’s more than just her “safe place.” He’s a fighter, too.
Hand-to-Hand with Kadijah
Writing the fight scene between Sassy and Kadijah was brutal. I wanted it to feel chaotic, exhausting, and real. It’s not a perfectly choreographed action scene. It’s raw survival.
Behind the writing:
I wanted readers to feel every punch, every moment of dizziness, and the desperation in Sassy’s crawl to the front door.
Sassy isn’t a superhero. She’s hurt, tired, and furious, and that makes her victory feel earned.
That Almost-Escape
Sassy crawling to the door, only to be met by a gun-toting Hinniyah, was one of the most cinematic moments I’ve ever written. That image stuck with me: the open door, the breath of freedom, and then, boom, threat returns.
Writer’s trick:
It’s a classic bait-and-switch scene. I wanted readers to exhale… then gasp.
It also gave me a chance to show just how unpredictable and dangerous Hinniyah really is.
Finally, the Sirens
The delay of the police wasn’t just a plot convenience; it was symbolic. Sometimes, help doesn’t come when you need it most. And sometimes, you have to do what you can to survive until it does.
Why I made that choice:
Sassy has been forced to fight through nearly every chapter of this book, emotionally, physically, and morally.
The sirens signal the beginning of the end, but also that healing can’t happen until the worst is over.
Full Circle Moments
The cast is almost off, but Sassy’s still not quite free.
The twins are finally caught in the act, but justice isn’t guaranteed yet.
Sassy has Jerry’s love and support, but she has to fight like hell to keep it.
As this book draws to a close, I wanted this chapter to feel like both a climax and a reckoning. Throughout this case, Sassy has been brought closer to this moment: standing between danger and the life she’s trying to build.
